Frequently asked questions
The questions students and parents ask us most. If yours is not here, ask the assistant at the bottom of the screen and a person will pick it up if it cannot answer.
Applying and booking
Pay the R650 non-refundable admin fee into the StayHope ABSA account, then complete the online application and upload your proof of payment. We confirm your room once your application and payment have been verified.
The R650 admin fee covers the processing of your application and reserves or books your room. It is non-refundable, whether or not your application is ultimately successful, and it is separate from your monthly rent and any deposit.
No. Your booking is only confirmed once StayHope has received and verified your completed application and proof of payment, and has confirmed availability in the residence and room type you asked for. Rooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Yes. We accept NSFAS funded students, bursary holders and cash paying students. Bring your funding or bursary confirmation letter with your application so we can process your placement without delay.
Rates depend on whether you take a room of your own or share it. Current rates are on the residence page when they are published for the year; if they are not up yet, contact us or ask the assistant, and we will tell you what your funding covers.
Living at StayHope
Your room comes furnished with a bed, desk, chair and wardrobe. Rent includes water and electricity, Wi-Fi, access to communal kitchens, study areas and laundry facilities, and cleaning of communal areas.
You are responsible for your own bedding, toiletries, groceries and personal belongings.
Bedding and pillows, towels, toiletries, your own crockery and cutlery, a padlock for your room or cupboard, your ID and student card, and your signed lease documents.
If you and a friend apply together and both request each other, we will do our best to place you in the same room, subject to availability. Rooms are single gender.
Visitors are allowed during visiting hours and must sign in at the entrance. Overnight visitors and sub-letting are not permitted. See the house rules for the detail.
Log it at report a fault. You get a ticket number and we tell you when the job moves. Anything unsafe, such as electrical faults, burst pipes or a door that will not lock, should be phoned or WhatsApped in immediately on 076 884 7372.
Leases and cancellation
Yes, provided you give one calendar month (30 days) notice in writing. The cancellation is subject to a reasonable cancellation penalty, which is normally any damage suffered by the landlord, including lost rental or replacement commission.
If the room is not re-let, you remain liable for rental up to a maximum of four months. Full terms are on the lease cancellation page.
Your deposit is refunded after you vacate, less the cost of any damage beyond fair wear and tear and any outstanding amounts on your account. A joint inspection is done when you move out.
Talk to us as soon as you know. Funding delays are common and we would far rather arrange something with you upfront than have your account fall into arrears. You remain responsible for any amount your funder does not cover.
Still have a question?
Ask the assistant. It answers most things on the spot and puts you through to a person when it cannot.
